Malcolm Gladwell is a best-selling author and famous journalist at the NewNotes on Summary writing
Yorker magazine. But not always. Witness his story—which was recorded live, on
stage at the Moth theater in New York—about his first job in journalism, and how
terrifying it was.
You will turn in summaries to me just as you do memos - in a stack on my table - the night you turn in your group project. The type of summary you are preparing for your group project is most comparable to a descriptive abstract.
See Qualities Of A Good Abstract from Purdue University OWL for guidelines.
Tips - An effective abstract
- uses one or more well-developed paragraphs, which are unified, coherent, concise, and able to stand alone
- is short - 300 words maximum for this assignment
- follows the memo format conventions
- adds no new information but simply summarizes the report
- is intelligible to a wide audience.
Assignments
- Memo #9 on preparing your part of the presentation
- Blog post on Tom Sumner's lecture/book publishing
- Read Ch. 14 (revising drafts), 15 (testing drafts)
- Optional: Bring in resume for public (in front of the class) review
